Tally Education’s online student portal, particularly its AI-powered proctoring system, faced usability challenges. Students found the exam interface confusing and stressful, while educators and content creators struggled with an inefficient system to upload and manage test questions. The goal was to create an intuitive, accessible, and efficient platform that streamlined both student experience and exam content management.

Enhance the AI proctoring system to reduce student stress and improve usability.
Improve navigation & accessibility for students taking exams.
Develop a Creator’s Dashboard to allow educators to upload, manage, and organize test questions seamlessly.
Research & Insights
Methods:
User Interviews & Surveys: Conducted 30+ interviews with students & educators.
Competitor Analysis: Studied similar proctoring & content management platforms.
Usability Testing: Observed students and educators interacting with the old system.

Confusing Navigation: Struggled to find exam details and instructions.
AI Proctoring Anxiety: Lack of transparency on how AI monitored them.
Technical Barriers: Issues with browser compatibility & accessibility.

Cumbersome Question Uploads: No bulk upload feature, leading to inefficiency.
Poor Content Organization: Difficulty in managing test sets & editing questions.
Design Strategy
To improve the platform, we focused on two key user groups:
For Students:
Simplified Navigation: Clearer instructions & streamlined UI.
AI Transparency Features: Real-time feedback & AI monitoring explanations.
Accessibility Enhancements: WCAG compliance, keyboard navigation.
For Educators & Content Creators:
Dedicated Creator’s Dashboard: A centralized hub for uploading & organizing test content.
Bulk Upload Capabilities: Allowing educators to manage large test banks efficiently.
Easy Editing & Categorization: Streamlined workflow for managing exam questions.
Process
1. Wireframing & Prototyping
Created low- and mid-fidelity wireframes for student & creator workflows.
Iterated designs based on feedback from usability testing.
2. Testing & Validation
Conducted usability testing with students and educators.
Made improvements based on their feedback on navigation, clarity, and efficiency.
3. Developer Collaboration
Worked closely with engineers to ensure smooth implementation.
Iterated UI based on technical constraints and stakeholder feedback.

Successfully redesigned the AI proctoring & Creator’s Dashboard, now used by 600,000+ students across India.
